Bible Passage:
Give ear, our God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name. — Daniel 9:18-19 (NIV)
Truth to Remember:
God is righteous and merciful. We approach Him with reverence, trusting His faithfulness and seeking to honour His name.
Devotional Reflection
Daniel approached God recognizing that the people had no claim to His favour based on their own righteousness. Daniel’s prayer included confession and an honest recognition of the people’s shortcomings. He did not approach God as though he were entitled to the desired outcome. Instead, he appealed to God’s great mercy and asked Him to act for the sake of His name. His prayer shows that he was concerned not only with the restoration of God’s people, but also with God’s name being honoured through the fulfilment of His Word.
This reminds me that when I come to God, my focus should not be merely on what I want Him to do for me, but on who He is and how I can honour Him. I depend on His mercy, not my own righteousness, and recognize that He is faithful to His Word. When I do not understand how or when He will fulfil His promises, I must trust His wisdom rather than judge His faithfulness by my circumstances. I want to value my relationship with Him above what I hope to receive and seek to align my desires with His so that His name will be honoured.
Application: Walking in Reverence
Understanding who God is shapes the way you approach Him in prayer. As you come before God, let your prayers reflect your reverence for Him. Recognize His righteousness, depend on His mercy, and desire that His name be honoured.
Reflection Question:
Am I seeking to know God and understand His Word or am I only seeking answers or promises?
Prayer:
Father God, thank You for the privilege of coming before You in prayer. Help me to understand more deeply who You are and to approach You with reverence. Teach me to depend on Your mercy rather than my own righteousness and to desire that Your name be honoured above my own requests. When I know what Your promises are concerning me, but they are yet to be my reality, help me to wait patiently on You, trusting in Your faithfulness and wisdom. Align my heart with Yours, so that honouring Your name is always my highest priority. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Claiming God’s Promise:
I will approach God with reverence, relying on His mercies and trusting that His name will be honoured.
